What kind of research background do I need to attend the Hermes Summer School?
For this year's edition of the summer school, there is no requirement to have any materials modelling research experience. Some experience with programming, Unix/Linux-based systems as well as using simulation software and/or codes would be helpful but is not a requirement. In previous editions of the summer school, participants had varied backgrounds, including physicists, materials scientists, chemists and engineers, and we hope to continue this tradition of bringing together PhD students from different research areas. Anyone with a desire to learn more about computational materials science as well as science communication would be very welcome at Hermes Summer School 2018!
I will be coming to Hermes Summer School from another country. Do I need a visa?
If you are from outside the EU, you may require a visa to attend. You can apply for this up to 3 months in advance (around the end of April 2016). For more information, visit https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-visas-and-immigration. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you have a valid visa to attend the summer school. If you are accepted to attend the summer school, we can provide you with an invitation letter in the format you require.
Do I need to prepare anything before I attend Hermes Summer School?
You should not need to prepare anything before the summer school. There may be a small amount of preparatory work to be done just before the summer school begins; this will largely depend on the style and content of the workshops our speakers are planning to offer. The summer school organisers will contact participants with any information about this type of preparation a few weeks before the summer school.
Will I receive a certificate of attendance?
Yes, we will issue certificates of attendance which you can collect during the summer school.
Are there plans to meet up in London before Hermes Summer School?
As a lot of our participants have quite far to travel, we are hoping to organise meet-ups before and after the summer school for those staying in London an extra night. This will probably involve sight-seeing and a trip to the pub for a pint or several. We may also be able to offer discounted accommodation at Imperial College halls, located in South Kensington right by the Science and Natural History Museums (and Hyde Park). Watch this space.
We all look forward to seeing you here in London for Hermes 2018!
